Fort Crockett sat on the Gulf end of Galveston Island in 1911, guarding the entrance to one of the busiest cotton and shipping ports on the Texas coast. The island was still recovering from the hurricane of September 1900, which killed thousands of residents and flooded much of the city, and the government and the city were then building a massive seawall and raising the grade of the town behind it. Army coastal artillery at the fort was part of a wider federal effort to protect Gulf harbors, and the post brought soldiers, payrolls, and families into a city that depended on wharves, grain and cotton trade, and rail links to the mainland. Galvestonians of the day knew the island as a place that had survived a catastrophe and was determined to outlast the next storm.
