Galveston, Texas, in August 1915 was still recovering from the 1900 hurricane, which had killed thousands and led the city to build its seawall and raise its street grade. On August 16 and 17, 1915, another hurricane drove a storm surge across the island, damaging the Army post at Fort Crockett on the Gulf side and battering houses and wharves along the shore. Galveston was then one of the Gulf Coast's major cotton and grain shipping ports, so the storm also disrupted the rail and steamship traffic that moved goods through the harbor. Residents knew the 1915 storm as a second blow to a city whose prosperity rested on trade. The picture records the damage at the fort, a military post that shared the island's losses with its civilian neighbors.
