Camp Travis, built in 1917 on the grounds of and beside Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, was one of the large training cantonments the War Department raised after Congress passed the Selective Service Act that May. Draftees from Texas, Oklahoma, and neighboring states arrived in crowds of tents and newly raised wooden barracks, and the 90th Division trained there before heading overseas to France. San Antonio had long been a garrison town, so the army's presence was already part of local life, but the new camp brought a sudden influx of young men, recruiting, and wartime rules to the city's streets and businesses. For residents in 1917, the camp was less a distant military project than a daily fact of life, shaping the local economy, the trains running through town, and the anxieties of families with sons in uniform.
