Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, in 1919 was one of the most important U.S. Army posts in the Southwest, a sprawling installation on the city's north side that had served as a cavalry and infantry base since the 1870s. The year came just after the First World War armistice, when the army was demobilizing its wartime camps and sending officers back to their home stations. San Antonio itself was a rail and military city whose economy leaned on the post, the Southern Pacific and Missouri-Kansas-Texas lines, and a growing population of soldiers and their families. The 1918 influenza epidemic had only recently passed through Army camps across the country, and the post's officers were returning to a peacetime routine of training, horse-era drills and garrison duty. This group portrait shows the commissioned men gathered as a unit, a record of the officer corps at a moment of transition.
