Fort Sam Houston, on the northern edge of San Antonio, Texas, was a major Army post in 1916, when the United States was building up its forces along the Mexican border. Revolutionary turmoil in Mexico had drawn American troops and attention to Texas since 1913, and San Antonio served as a staging ground for units sent to patrol the border and guard against raids. The motor truck group pictured here reflects a shift underway in the Army, as mechanized transport was beginning to replace mule and horse teams for hauling supplies. San Antonio's economy then rested on its military payroll, cattle and ranching trade, and a growing tourist and missions-heritage reputation, and the post was a familiar presence to residents across the city.
