Fort Sam Houston, on the northern edge of San Antonio, Texas, hosted a major Army maneuver camp in 1911, when troops trained in field exercises across the surrounding countryside. The post had been founded in 1876 and by then served as a key cavalry and infantry base for the Army's Southern Department, which made San Antonio a regular stop for soldiers moving between the Texas frontier and the Mexican border. The city itself was a commercial center of railroads, wholesale trade, cattle, and military payrolls, and its residents watched the camp's tents, horses, and supply wagons as a daily part of local life. That spring, unrest across the Rio Grande during the Mexican Revolution gave the training an added urgency, and the maneuvers showed San Antonians how closely their city was tied to national defense.
