Houston in 1911 was a growing city with electric streetcars running through its streets and new subdivisions spreading past the older core. Oil had reshaped Texas after the Spindletop gusher near Beaumont in 1901, and Houston's merchants and bankers were positioning the city to supply the machinery and money that the oil fields demanded. Dredging crews were working on the ship channel toward Galveston Bay, a project local boosters pressed as the cure for the city's long distance from deep water. Meanwhile, the estate of the merchant William Marsh Rice, murdered in 1900, was being settled, and plans for the school it would fund were taking shape.
