Aransas Pass in 1911 was a young Gulf Coast town still measuring its safety against the Galveston hurricane of September 1900, which killed thousands and reshaped how every coastal community on the Texas shore thought about storms. Residents who had lived through that season or heard its accounts knew that a low, wind-exposed island town could be swept away in a night, and that knowledge shaped where people built and how they talked about the Gulf. Beyond the water, Texans followed the Mexican Revolution, which had begun in late 1910, and the border unrest it stirred up made news in local papers and political conversation. This image shows a town looking out at its own shoreline, aware of both the sea and the wider world beyond it.
