Aransas Pass, Texas, sat on the Gulf Coast in 1911 at the mouth of a natural channel between Mustang Island and St. Joseph Island, and the town's future depended on that water. Railroad lines had reached the coast in the years before, linking the port to cattle country and to inland markets, and shipping, fishing, and the handling of coastal freight formed the local economy. The channel was the reason for the town, and residents tracked its depth and the traffic moving through it as closely as they tracked prices for cattle and produce. Civic life in a small Gulf port of that era revolved around the wharves, the depot, and the church and school. This panorama records a community that understood itself mainly through its waterfront and its rail connections.
