Dallas in 1911 was a rail and cotton trading city of roughly 90,000 people, and the Buckner Orphans Home on its eastern edge was one of the best-known charities in Texas. Baptist minister R. C. Buckner founded the home in the 1880s with money he had set aside for needy children, and by the 1910s it cared for orphaned and destitute boys and girls from across the state. Its grounds and farm buildings sat apart from the downtown streetcar and railroad district, so residents who rode out to see the home treated it as a place of country quiet as well as charity. Texas Baptists raised funds for it through church collections and annual drives, and many Dallas families knew it through those campaigns. The home's steady growth reflected a wider faith in church-run institutions that were expected to care for children when families could not.
