San Benito, Texas, in 1911 was a young farming town in the lower Rio Grande Valley, set among irrigated fields that had recently been cleared from brush country and planted in orchards and truck gardens. Railroads and irrigation canals drew settlers from the North and Midwest, who grew citrus, vegetables, and cotton and shipped their crops out by rail. Across the river, the Mexican Revolution had begun the previous year, and news of fighting, refugees, and border raids reached residents on the Texas side as a constant concern. A street scene like this one would have shown merchants, wagons, and townspeople building a community quickly, with stores, schools, and churches going up as the population grew. Most people there knew the town first for its farms and for the water that made them possible.
