In 1920, Fort Sam Houston was one of the largest Army posts in Texas, and its presence was a major part of San Antonio's economy, which still rested on wholesale trade, ranching, and the military payroll. The First World War had ended about a year earlier, and the country was demobilizing its wartime forces while debating how large a peacetime army should be. John J. Pershing, who had commanded the American Expeditionary Forces in France, was the most famous soldier in the nation, so a visit by him drew crowds and attention from local newspapers. Residents of San Antonio knew the post as a center of Army life in the South, where soldiers trained, drilled, and mixed with the city's civilian population.
