In October 1917, Camp Travis was a newly built Army cantonment on the northern edge of San Antonio, Texas, one of the large training camps the War Department raised that year after Congress passed the Selective Service Act in May. Construction had moved fast through the summer, and the camp took its name from William Barret Travis, the commander who died at the Alamo. San Antonio was already a major military town, home to Fort Sam Houston, and its merchants, rail lines and boarding houses absorbed a sudden influx of draftees, officers and visiting families. The 90th Division trained at Travis that fall, and local residents followed the arrival of new units with pride and a good deal of worry about the war in France. The panorama records a camp still raw and crowded, the kind of place that would soon be familiar to thousands of Texas men.
