Camp Wilson, photographed in San Antonio, Texas, in 1916, stood in a city of about 96,000 people in the 1910 census, and its population was climbing fast. Much of that growth came from Mexican families who crossed north after 1910 to escape the upheaval of the Mexican Revolution, and their arrival gave the West Side and the streets near the river a strongly Spanish-speaking character. The older city still defined itself by its missions, the Alamo plaza, and the cattle and freight trade that had long moved through town, while its newer economy leaned on railroads and wholesale commerce. Local newspapers in 1916 followed events across the border closely, and many families read every dispatch with relatives or property on the other side of the Rio Grande in mind.
