Goose Creek, on the edge of Baytown in Harris County, Texas, was one of the most talked-about oil fields in the country in 1917. A major strike in 1916 brought derricks onto the flat, marshy ground near the Houston Ship Channel, which had opened to deep-draft shipping in 1914. Companies such as the Humble Oil and Refining Company, organized in 1917 to develop the field, drilled quickly as the United States entered the First World War in April, and the crude was in demand for fuel and industrial use. Residents knew the district as a rough boomtown of oil workers, pipelines and tank farms, where housing and services struggled to keep pace with the newcomers.
