In 1919, the Goose Creek oil field around Baytown, on the eastern edge of Harris County, Texas, was one of the most productive fields on the Gulf Coast. Its discovery in 1916 had turned a quiet stretch of marsh and farmland into a crowded camp of derricks, pipelines, and workers' housing, and Humble Oil was the largest operator there. Oil from the field fed the refineries and shipping that were growing along the Houston Ship Channel, and the boom drew in laborers and merchants faster than the local towns could house them. The cyclone of May 24, 1919, tore through the derricks and storage tanks, and the photograph records the damage and the rebuilding that followed. Residents would have known the place first as the center of the Texas oil boom that had only recently reshaped the region.
