Goose Creek, on the bay side of Baytown in Harris and Chambers counties, was one of the most productive oil fields in Texas in 1919. Its discovery in 1916 had turned a quiet stretch of marsh and cattle range into a boomtown of derricks, pipelines, and temporary housing. The field's crude fed nearby refineries and was shipped out through the Houston Ship Channel, which had opened in 1914 and gave the Gulf Coast an inland port. The wartime demand for fuel that had driven drilling was ending just as the industry was expanding, and residents of the district knew their town as the center of the new oil economy.
