Burkburnett, in North Texas near the Red River and the Oklahoma line, was in 1919 one of the most talked-about places in the country because of its oil. The Burkburnett field had been struck in 1918, and within months the town swelled with wildcatters, roughnecks, and merchants chasing leases, so that wooden derricks crowded the land around the old farm settlement. Housing ran short, tents and shacks spread across the prairie, and the boom brought saloons, gambling halls, and a rough street life that outsiders read about in newspapers. Wichita Falls, a few miles south and already a railroad town, served as the supply and shipping center for the field, which made the district a sharp symbol of how quickly Texas was becoming an oil state.
