Desdemona, in Eastland County in north-central Texas, was a small farming and ranching community until oil came in nearby in 1918. Within a year the land around the town was crowded with derricks, and workers, land speculators, and supply merchants arrived faster than housing could be built, so tents and hastily framed shacks spread across the surrounding pastures. The boom that began at Ranger in 1917 had already made Eastland County a center of wildcat drilling, and residents of Desdemona knew their town as a place where fortunes were made and lost almost overnight. Daily life revolved around leases, crude prices, and freight wagons hauling pipe and drilling tools over dirt roads. This view of the Terry tract shows the field at the height of that rush.
