Burkburnett, in Wichita County in north Texas, was a boom town in 1919, the year after oil was struck in the surrounding fields in 1918. Wildcatters, drillers, and laborers poured in from across the state and beyond, and the town could not house them, so many lived in tents and shacks on the edge of the leases. Wichita Falls, a few miles away, supplied the equipment, supplies, and railroad service that kept the wells running, and the local economy shifted almost overnight from cattle and farming toward petroleum. Derricks crowding the open prairie were the clearest sign of that change, and residents already measured the community by its drilling activity and the next well coming in.
