Eastland County, Texas, in 1919 was in the middle of an oil boom that had transformed a farming and ranching region within about two years. Wildcat drilling after the 1917 discoveries near Ranger and Desdemona brought speculators, drillers, and laborers into towns that had been small agricultural trade centers, and rigs began crowding onto leases around them. Housing could not keep up, so many workers lived in tents, shacks, and boarding houses, while merchants and saloons ran at all hours. Residents of the county would have known the area first for cattle, cotton, and the Eastland courthouse, but by this year oil had become the subject of nearly every conversation in town.
