Burkburnett, in north Texas near the Red River and the Oklahoma line, was a boomtown in 1919 after oil was struck there in 1918 on land that had been farmed and grazed for decades. The Burkburnett field drew wildcatters, leaseholders, and crews of drillers, and derricks crowded the open prairie around the small town, which grew quickly with tent camps, hotels, saloons, and supply yards. Wichita Falls, a rail hub about a dozen miles away, supplied much of the equipment and housed many of the workers and investors. Residents of the period knew the place as one of the most productive new fields in the state, and its rapid growth made it a symbol of the wider Texas oil boom.
