Desdemona, in Eastland County, Texas, was a small farming community until 1918, when a strike in the surrounding oil country set off a rush of drillers, speculators, and laborers. By 1919 wooden derricks stood among cotton fields and pastures, and tents and hastily built frame houses crowded the roads as newcomers arrived faster than housing, water, and services could keep up. The boom was part of a wider surge in West Texas oil that made the Eastland County area one of the state's most closely watched fields, and it drew money and migrants into towns that had been quiet for decades. Residents of the time knew Desdemona as a place where a farm could become an oil lease overnight, and where the rhythm of business, housing, and daily life was set by the drilling rigs.
