In 1919 Desdemona was a small community in Eastland County, north-central Texas, where families were adjusting to the armistice of November 1918 and the return of young men from the war. The county's economy rested on farm trade and rail shipping, and the Texas and Pacific Railway line that ran through the county connected local merchants to wider markets. The influenza epidemic of 1918 had recently closed schools and churches across Texas, and towns like this were still counting their dead and rebuilding public life. This panorama shows a place of modest frame buildings, where residents would have measured progress by their churches, stores, and the trains that stopped in town.
