Desdemona, in Eastland County of north central Texas, was a small railroad-era farming town in 1919, and the countryside around it was changing fast. The Ranger oil strike of 1917 had set off a leasing rush across Eastland County, and wildcat drilling reached the Desdemona area as well, bringing crews, teams, and land speculators into farms that had long grown cotton and grain. Local families who had worked the same fields for a generation now watched rigs and lease stakes appear beside their pastures. Many residents expected the boom to bring steady money, though most also knew that a well could be a fortune one season and a dry hole the next.
