Burkburnett, in Wichita County in North Texas, was a small ranching community until the autumn of 1918, when a wildcat well drilled on land tied to the Burk Burnett ranch brought in oil. By 1919 the town was swelling with roughnecks, teamsters, merchants, and speculators who arrived faster than housing could be built, so tents, shacks, and hastily framed stores crowded streets laid out in new blocks. This panoramic view of the district captures that rush, with lease brokers and supply houses lining the main streets and the nearby city of Wichita Falls serving as a source of freight and supplies. Residents in 1919 knew the place chiefly as an oil boom town, and its fortunes rose and fell with each new well drilled in the surrounding field.
