Burkburnett, in Wichita County, Texas, was a small ranching community in 1919 that had been transformed by the oil boom that began in 1918. Wells drilled on and around the Burk Burnett ranch lands drew speculators, drillers, and laborers, and the town spread outward faster than its streets and services could follow. The grid of numbered blocks shown in this panorama reflects that rapid platting, as lots were surveyed and sold to newcomers living in tents, shacks, and hastily built frame houses. Residents of Wichita Falls, a larger city about a dozen miles away, watched the field's growth closely, since it promised new trade for their railroads, banks, and supply houses. For the people of Burkburnett, the year was defined by crowded streets, rising land prices, and the uneasy question of how long the oil would last.
