In 1919, the Red River country of north Texas was in the middle of an oil boom centered on Burkburnett and Wichita Falls in Wichita County. Before the strikes of 1918, the region had lived on cotton, cattle, and the railroad traffic that moved through Wichita Falls, but leasemen and drillers now crowded into farm land and river bottoms looking for production. Ownership of the Red River bed was disputed between Texas and Oklahoma, which made leases along the riverbank both valuable and legally uncertain. Crowded boomtowns of tents, shacks, and boarding houses grew up quickly, straining water, housing, and law enforcement. Residents of the area would have known 1919 as the year the Red River fields turned Wichita County into one of the most talked-about oil districts in the country.
