The Burk-Waggoner district in Wichita County, north Texas, was in 1919 one of the most closely watched oil fields in the country, a little over a year after drillers struck oil on land tied to the Waggoner cattle ranch and the Burk Burnett holdings. The discovery turned ranch country near Wichita Falls into a crowded landscape of derricks, tent camps, and rough new streets, as leaseholders, laborers, and merchants arrived faster than housing could be built. Oil money began to reshape the local economy, pulling attention away from cattle and cotton toward pipelines, storage tanks, and the rail freight that carried crude to market. People in Wichita Falls and the surrounding oil towns knew the district as a place where fortunes could be made overnight and lost just as quickly, a reputation that stayed with the field through the years after the war.
