Burkburnett, in Wichita County in north Texas, was a small ranching community in 1919 that oil had transformed within the previous year. A productive well on land associated with the cattleman Burk Burnett drew drillers, laborers, and speculators from across the Southwest. Derricks crowded the town's edges while housing ran short, so many newcomers lived in tents, shacks, and crowded boarding rooms. The boom also pulled attention to Wichita Falls, a railroad and cotton center a short distance away, and residents knew Burkburnett mainly as one of the state's busiest oil camps.
