In 1919, the Burk-Waggoner district in Wichita County, north Texas, was in the middle of an oil boom that had started the previous year, when wells drilled on land once tied to the Burk Burnett and Waggoner cattle ranches struck oil. Derricks crowded the prairie around the new field, and workers, speculators, and merchants poured in faster than housing could be built, so many families lived in tents and shacks. The nearby town of Burkburnett grew up almost overnight, and Wichita Falls, a short distance away, became the supply and rail center for the field. Residents knew the district for its wells, its crowded streets, and the sudden fortunes and busts that the boom brought.
