Desdemona, a small community in Eastland County in north-central Texas, was swept up in the oil boom of 1918 and 1919, when wildcat drilling spread across the county after the strikes at nearby Ranger. Before the boom, the surrounding land had supported cotton farming and cattle ranching, and the sudden arrival of drillers, leaseholders, and supply merchants strained housing and roads. Many residents in 1919 would have measured their town by the rigs rising on the outskirts and the crowds on its unpaved streets. The panorama captures a community caught between its agricultural past and an industry that was reshaping Eastland County almost overnight.
