In 1919 Desdemona was a small farm community in Eastland County, north-central Texas, where cotton and pasture set the rhythm of daily life. When the crop came in, wagons loaded with bales rolled toward the gins, and the money from the harvest decided what local stores could extend on credit over the coming year. School terms were often shortened so children could help in the fields. Churches, lodges, and Saturday trading in town gave families their main social life, and the boll weevil, which had spread across Texas for years, remained a steady worry for anyone whose living depended on cotton.
