Desdemona, in Eastland County in north-central Texas, was in the middle of an oil boom in 1919. Wildcatters had struck oil there the previous year, and within months the countryside filled with derricks, storage tanks, and crews drawn from farms and older oil camps across the state. The town grew faster than its streets and water lines could handle, with tents, shacks, and hastily framed stores lining the roads around the wells. Eastland County had been ranch and farm country, and the sudden wealth and crowds changed daily life, bringing boarding houses, saloons, and long lines at the depots where oil and supplies moved out by rail. Residents would have known Desdemona as one of the newest and rowdiest Texas fields, a place where fortunes could be made in a season and lost just as quickly.
