Burkburnett, in Wichita County in north Texas, was in the middle of an oil boom in 1919. Drillers struck oil in the area in 1918, and the town filled with leaseholders, roughneckers, supply merchants, and traders who arrived faster than housing and streets could be built. Wooden derricks and tent and shack neighborhoods crowded onto the surrounding ranch land, and the nearby city of Wichita Falls served as the larger commercial center for the boomers. The Van Cleave-Fowler name in this view points to one of the lease tracts or subdivisions being opened around the field, where new wells were going down almost daily. Residents of the period knew Burkburnett above all as a raw, fast-growing oil town.
