Burkburnett, Texas, in April 1919 was a small ranch town in Wichita County that had been transformed within the previous year by oil. Drillers struck productive wells in the area in 1918, and the boom drew crews, speculators, and job seekers from across the state and beyond. Housing could not keep pace, so tents, shacks, and crowded boarding houses spread across the countryside, while Wichita Falls, about a dozen miles away, served as the nearest rail and supply center. Residents of the time knew the town chiefly as an oil camp, a place where fortunes were made quickly and where the sudden arrival of population strained streets, water, and local law. A photograph taken on this spring day records that rapid, unsettled growth.
