Burkburnett, Texas, in 1919 was a North Texas town being remade by oil. The field around it had opened only the year before, and drilling rigs, storage tanks and wooden derricks were crowding into land that had long been cattle country tied to the Burk Burnett ranch that gave the town its name. Workers, promoters and leaseholders arrived faster than housing could be built, so tent camps and rough frame buildings spread across the edges of town. Residents of the period knew Burkburnett as a boomtown, and its fortunes were bound up with the nearby city of Wichita Falls, which served as its supply and rail center.
