Burkburnett, in Wichita County in North Texas, was a small ranching town until oil was struck nearby in 1918, and by 1919 the boom had transformed it. Drillers, teamsters, laborers, and traders poured in from across Texas and neighboring states, and housing ran short as tents, shacks, and hastily built frame buildings crowded the streets and the edges of the oil leases. The town sat close to Wichita Falls, which had its own growth from the same strike, and the two communities depended on each other for supplies, rail freight, and workers. Residents of the period knew Burkburnett above all as a raw, fast-growing oil town, where the pace of new wells, new arrivals, and new business shaped daily life.
