Wichita Falls, the seat of Wichita County in north Texas, looked out in 1919 on a town that the oil industry had transformed within the decade. Oil strikes at nearby Electra in 1911 and Burkburnett in 1918 drew speculators, drillers, and laborers, and the city's streets, hotels, and rail yards filled with newcomers. Its earlier economy rested on cotton, grain, and livestock shipped out over the Fort Worth and Denver City and the Katy railroads, which had brought the town its growth since the 1880s. Homer T. Harden made this view of a city block from the west, a record of ordinary downtown buildings at a moment when the town was still adjusting to its sudden prosperity and the postwar years.
