In 1919, the oil camp at Oil, Texas, sat within the fast-growing North Texas oil country, where wells, derricks, and leases had multiplied since the strikes of 1917 and 1918 around Ranger and Burkburnett. Lease blocks like Block 818 were laid out in a grid of survey numbers, and each parcel was worth a fortune to a small operator who could bring in a producing well. Crews, teamsters, and drillers arrived faster than housing and roads could follow, so tents, shacks, and boardinghouses crowded beside the rigs. Local residents knew the region for its sudden wealth, rough saloons, and the scramble to lease and drill land before neighbors did. The view of the derricks laid out in each direction shows how completely the oil industry had taken over the landscape in those years.
