Hardin, in Liberty County in the piney-woods and river-bottom country of Southeast Texas, was a small farming and trading town in 1919. Its economy rested mainly on cotton, cattle, and timber, with lumber and farm goods moving out by wagon and rail to larger markets such as Houston and Beaumont. The end of the First World War had only recently brought soldiers home, and the influenza epidemic of 1918 and 1919 had left many rural communities in the region grieving and short-staffed. Residents of the time would have known Hardin as a place where church, school, the courthouse square, and the seasonal rhythms of planting and harvest set the pace of daily life.
