In 1919, Gilliland was a small railroad community in Knox County, in the rolling northwest Texas country where cotton farming and cattle ranching were the main ways people made a living. The town grew up around the rail line and served as a shipping point for crops and livestock, and its residents depended on the depot, local stores, and the wagon roads that brought farm families in to trade. The title's reference to Humble points to the Humble Oil and Refining Company, which had been formed in 1917 from the oil fields near Humble, south of Houston, and was then expanding its operations across Texas as oil became a larger part of the state's economy. Veterans home from the First World War and families still recovering from the 1918 influenza epidemic would have been part of daily life in the county that year.
