Ranger, in Eastland County, Texas, was in 1919 a town shaped by the oil boom that had followed the discovery of petroleum nearby in 1917. Wooden derricks crowded the surrounding land, and the town's population swelled far beyond what its streets and houses had been built to hold, with workers, speculators, and merchants arriving by rail and road. The Texas & Pacific Railway gave the town a link to outside markets, and the influx of money and people brought hotels, supply houses, and saloons that changed the town's character almost overnight. Residents of the period would have known Ranger as an oil town first, a place where fortunes rose and fell with each new well, and the view from the south shows how the boom had pushed the town's edges outward across the open prairie.
