Ranger, Texas, in 1919 was a small Eastland County town that had grown from a sleepy farm trading post into a crowded oil center within a few years. Before the boom, the surrounding country had been mostly cotton fields and cattle pasture, and the town took its name from the Texas Rangers who had once camped in the area. By 1919, the growth showed in the streets, where new commercial buildings and hastily framed houses stood side by side, and where wagons hauling pipe and lumber competed for space with automobiles. Residents also knew that the same boom that brought prosperity had brought strain to the town's schools, water supply, and public order, and civic leaders were working to keep pace with it.
