Corpus Christi, on the Texas Gulf coast, was a city of roughly 10,000 people in 1919, and its economy rested on cattle, cotton, and the shipping that moved those goods through its harbor. On September 14, 1919, a hurricane came ashore near the city and battered its waterfront, low-lying streets, and frame houses. Residents were used to working the bay and the docks, so the damage fell hard on the families whose livelihoods depended on boats, warehouses, and the rail and wharf connections that tied the port to the interior. This photograph records the aftermath, with wrecked buildings and debris marking the path of the storm. Rebuilding in the following months became a local priority, and the storm stayed in local memory as a reminder of how exposed the coastal town was.
