Ranger, Texas, in 1919 was still absorbing the shock of its 1917 oil strike while the rest of the country was returning to peacetime. The Armistice had ended the fighting in Europe in November 1918, and servicemen coming home faced a town where wages were high but the rules of ordinary life were still unsettled. Texas had voted for statewide prohibition in 1918, which took effect in 1919, so the saloons that had served the crowds of wildcatters and laborers were under pressure to close. Local merchants and church members debated whether a raw oil camp could become a stable town, and most people understood that the answer depended on how long the field would keep producing.
