Ranger, Texas, in 1919 was a boom town in Eastland County, built almost overnight after oil was struck nearby in 1917. The discovery drew wildcatters, drillers, teamsters, and merchants from across the state, and the population grew far faster than housing, so many newcomers lived in tents and crowded boardinghouses. Wooden derricks rose on the edges of town, and the Texas and Pacific Railway line carried equipment and supplies in and crude oil out. Residents knew Ranger as one of the first major oil discoveries after Spindletop, and they were already living with the rush, the shortages, and the uncertainty of a field whose future no one could yet predict.
