Camp Sevier, on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, was a training cantonment built in 1917 for the 30th Division, a National Guard formation drawn from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Through 1918 the camp filled with draftees and recruits, and the town swelled with soldiers, visiting families, and the workers who kept the camp supplied. Greenville was then an upcountry textile center, with cotton mills along the Reedy River and rail lines carrying bales and finished cloth out of the region. The division shipped overseas in the spring and summer of 1918, while the camp's Y.M.C.A. huts offered soldiers reading rooms and entertainment until influenza swept through the cantonment that autumn.
