Camp Sevier, photographed in 1918, spread across farmland on the edge of Greenville, South Carolina, with rows of wood-frame barracks, drill grounds, and supply buildings laid out on ground that had been fields only a year earlier. The camp took its name from John Sevier, the frontiersman who became the first governor of Tennessee, a choice that linked the training ground to the mountain and Piedmont country where many of its recruits lived. Greenville residents took part in the federal war loan drives of 1918 and often drove out on weekends to watch the troops, so the camp became a regular part of local civic life. When the armistice was signed in November 1918, many of the men who had trained there were still waiting for orders, and their discharges would stretch across the following months.
