Camp Sevier, on the outskirts of Greenville, South Carolina, was one of the large cantonments the United States built in 1917 to train its wartime army. Its troops came largely from the National Guard of the Carolinas and Tennessee, and the 30th Division trained there through 1918. Greenville was then a textile town, with cotton mills along the Reedy River and the surrounding Piedmont counties, so the camp brought soldiers, contractors, and new business into a city that had grown on mill payrolls. Local residents knew the camp as a source of jobs and visitors, and also as a place where young men from the region were preparing for service in France. In the fall of 1918, influenza spread through crowded army camps across the country, and Camp Sevier was no exception.
